Carla and Julian are twins who arrived at Salomon Klein as newborns because they had been abandoned under terrible, inhumane conditions.  They were severely undernourished and weighed only 4 pounds each.  From the second they arrived, both children were given a wide range of quality care, and most of all, human contact and warmth.  Carlos and Julian gained weight, grew stronger, and developed into healthy young children.  When they were six years old, they were adopted by a Bolivian couple who are teachers and who did not have children, but wanted to provide education and love to these two wonderful kids.  So it was that we had the wonderful experience of having Carla and Julian find a home.  And we knew they would never forget the care, love and memories of Salomon Klein and Mama Emma since they were so little.  It is such a joy to us that this Bolivian family loves these kids so much.  They are doing so well and are now among the best students in their school!  It is a great source of pride for Salomon Klein and Mama Emma that Carla and Julian are in the care of a loving family, just like those children who were adopted years ago in the United States and other countries who have benefited from loving families and are the hope and future for all of us.

My name is Patrizia Gerber and I was adopted from Salomon Klein in October, 1999 at the age of 7 months.  My wonderful parents are from Switzerland and that is where I still live today.  I have an older brother who was adopted two years before me. 
 
I returned to Salomon Klein for a visit when I was ten years old.  My family and I volunteered at the orphanage for a week.  We fed the babies and helped out in other ways.  It was a very emotional experience, but because I was so young, I don’t remember everything.  I definitely want to go back as soon as possible!
 
When I found the “Friends of Salomon Klein” website through a random internet search, I connected with Richard, one of their board members.  He put me in touch with two other adoptees from Salomon Klein, Holly Sandelow and Marc Conrad, and since I joined the Salomon Klein orphans’ Facebook group, I have made many other important connections. 
 
I want to share my very strong feeling with everyone that we should never forget where we came from.  We should always remember our roots, but also accept our lives now.  We should be very grateful for what we have become, even if some of us are still struggling with memories from before the orphanage, thoughts about our biological families, and other things, too.  I certainly do.  And I don’t know if you, the other children adopted from Salomon Klein, share the same opinion, but aren’t we all like brothers and sisters?  

Mi nombre es Patrizia Gerber y fui adoptada por Salomon Klein en octubre de 1999 a la edad de 7 meses. Mis padres maravillosos son de Suiza y es donde todavía vivo hoy. Tengo un hermano mayor que fue adoptado dos años antes que yo.

Regresé a Salomón Klein para una visita cuando tenía diez años. Mi familia y yo nos ofrecimos voluntariamente en el orfanato durante una semana. Alimentamos a los bebés y ayudamos de otras maneras. Fue una experiencia muy emotiva, pero porque yo era tan joven, no me acuerdo de todo. Sin duda quiero volver tan pronto como sea posible!

​From August 1996-June 1997, I was a Rotary Exchange student in Cochabamba.  Within a few months, I met Sister Josephine who introduced me to Salomon Klein.  I started out volunteering five days a week during “summer vacation” and as much as possible once school went back in session.

At the orphanage, I worked primarily with children three years and older.  Towards the end of my stay, however, there was a mumps outbreak and a few of the “mamas” who worked with the youngest babies in the orphanage were pregnant.  Because of this, Emma Rojas had me work with the newborns and babies who were one and two years old.

I have fond memories of teaching the children songs like "Ring Around the Rosie" and "London Bridge." We also did lots of crafts for Christmas, and I was able to put on a Santa hat and provide the children with a special Christmas gift that year, which was the result of a generous $2000 in donations I was able to collect from the United States.

I treasure my memories at the home and have hundreds of photos from my time there.  It was a life-changing experience and I hope to return some day to volunteer again.

Desde agosto de 1996-junio 1997, era un estudiante de intercambio de Rotary en Cochabamba.  Dentro de unos meses, conocí a hermana Josephine quien me introdujo a Salomon Klein.  Empecé voluntariado cinco días a la semana durante las "vacaciones de verano" y una vez lo posible escuela volvió en sesión.

En el orfanato, trabajó principalmente con los niños tres años de edad.  Hacia el final de mi estancia, sin embargo, hubo un brote de paperas y algunos de las "mamas" que trabajó con los más pequeños bebés en el orfanato estaban embarazadas.  Debido a esto, Emma Rojas me hizo trabajar con los recién nacidos y los bebés que tenían uno y dos años.

In Bolivia, April 12th marks International Children's Day. So at the Salomon Klein Orphanage, they celebrated along with the Easter holiday. Mama Emma, the director of the orphanage, prepared games, activities, dancing and a great feast. The children had such an incredible time. The amazing work that Mama Emma and her staff do for these children is simply incredible.
